Heightened political tensions between Alma movement and opposition figures
The movement Alma, led by Odysseas Michaelides, has engaged in a public exchange of accusations with DIKO president Nikolas Papadopoulos and former president Nicos Anastasiades. Alma accused Papadopoulos of misrepresenting the truth and criticized his political conduct, citing potential conflicts of interest regarding bank-related dealings and non-performing loans. Separately, the movement launched a sharp attack against former president Nicos Anastasiades following his recent interview on Vergina TV. Anastasiades had characterized Michaelides as having an 'obsession' and remarked that he regretted not studying psychiatry to better observe him. Alma responded by suggesting that in a functioning rule of law, Anastasiades would face legal scrutiny for his tenure, specifically mentioning the golden passports scandal and the Panama Papers. The movement also criticized DISY officials, such as Onoufrios Koullas and Giorgos Pamporidis, for allegedly using derogatory language against Michaelides. These exchanges highlight the growing polarization in Cypriot politics as the elections approach. The movement claims these attacks are efforts to distract the public from allegations of corruption linked to the previous administration.
