International condemnation following Israeli interception of Global Sumud Flotilla
On May 18-19, 2026, Israeli naval forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, consisting of approximately 50 vessels and 430 activists, in international waters west of Cyprus. The flotilla, which departed from southern Turkey, intended to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, defying Israel’s naval blockade. Following the interception, activists were transported to the port of Ashdod. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir shared social media footage showing detainees kneeling with their hands tied, which drew sharp criticism from international leaders and the European Council. Governments including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, and Australia expressed concern over the treatment of the detainees, with some summoning Israeli ambassadors. While Ben-Gvir defended his actions as a display of strength, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu distanced himself from the conduct, labeling it inconsistent with Israel's values. Israeli authorities have stated that the activists will be deported as quickly as possible. The flotilla organizers maintain that the humanitarian aid mission is necessary due to ongoing shortages in Gaza.
