Israeli forces intercept Gaza-bound aid flotilla

On Tuesday, Israeli naval forces intercepted the 'Global Sumud' flotilla, consisting of approximately 50 vessels, in international waters. The convoy, which departed from Turkey, aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, challenging the ongoing Israeli naval blockade. Approximately 430 activists from over 40 countries were detained and transported to an Israeli port. Following their detention, organisers reported that several participants were hospitalised, with at least 15 individuals alleging sexual abuse and rape; however, the Israeli Prison Service has categorically denied these accusations. Footage showing activists kneeling in zip-ties under the supervision of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir sparked international condemnation from various nations and the European Council. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu distanced his government from the conduct observed in the videos, and the detainees were subsequently released to be deported to Turkey via Ramon Airport. Authorities in Italy have reportedly initiated an investigation into potential crimes including kidnapping and sexual assault. The Israeli military maintains that the interception was a lawful enforcement of the naval blockade for security reasons.
