Cyprus Ports Authority to lead development of Larnaca port and marina

The Cypriot government has officially decided that the Cyprus Ports Authority will take over the development of the Larnaca port, marina, and surrounding land area. In response, trade unions OMEPEGE-SEK and SEGDAMELIN-PEO expressed a positive outlook on the change in management. The unions have formally petitioned the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeadis, to prioritize the protection of existing jobs. A primary goal is to ensure the implementation of an agreement signed between the government and employee representatives on May 29, 2024. This agreement covers transitional employment for staff affected by the transition, the utilization of their expertise, and provisions for their hiring by future contractors. The unions are requesting an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Labour and the Cyprus Ports Authority to clarify the transition timelines. They seek formal confirmation that all labor rights and employment commitments will be fully upheld during this new development phase.
