Court to decide on release of George Christodoulou, also known as Zavrantonas

On May 25, the Nicosia Criminal Court is scheduled to rule on whether George Christodoulou, known as Zavrantonas, will be released on bail or remain in custody during the retrial of his case. Christodoulou was originally sentenced to 22 years in prison on December 21, 2022, for possession of 15 kilograms of cocaine with intent to supply. His conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal on May 11, 2026, which ordered a retrial. During the recent hearing, the prosecution argued for his continued detention, citing a risk of flight and potential for re-offending. Defense attorney Christos Poutziouris requested his release, noting that Christodoulou has been detained for six years and that other involved parties have already been released. The defense also argued that the evidence remains questionable and that strict bail conditions could ensure his presence in court. Additionally, the court approved a request by the defense to obtain documents related to the presidential pardon of another convicted individual, Giannis Andreou. The next court session is pending the decision on the detention request.
