Eurostat reports demographic shifts and population growth in Cyprus and the EU

According to Eurostat data released in early 2025, the population of Cyprus increased to 982,966 residents on January 1, 2025, up from 966,365 in 2024. Between 2005 and 2025, Cyprus experienced a 34% population increase, marking it as one of the fastest-growing member states, while the EU population grew by 4% to 451 million during the same period. The data indicates significant demographic aging, with the EU median age rising to 44.9 years and the proportion of people aged 65 and over reaching 22%. In Cyprus, the median age reached 41 years in 2025, up from 34.9 in 2005, while children under 15 make up 15.2% of its population. While the EU has faced more deaths than births since 2012, Cyprus continues to see migration-driven growth, recording 40,471 arrivals in 2024. Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland remain the most populous EU states, collectively holding 66% of the union's population.
