Malfunctioning refrigeration units at Paphos General Hospital morgue raise concerns

Acting Mayor of Paphos, Angelos Onisiforou, has reported that the refrigeration units at the Paphos General Hospital morgue have been out of order for several days, causing significant issues with body preservation. Onisiforou stated that this situation has led to offensive conditions and public health concerns, noting specific complaints from citizens and funeral homes about foul odors. A notable incident involved a woman who had to delay her mother’s funeral due to the poor condition of the remains. Furthermore, Onisiforou criticized the lack of a resident pathologist in Paphos, which necessitates the transport of bodies to Nicosia for autopsies and back, causing additional psychological and financial strain on families. While Onisiforou claims he could not reach state health authorities, the Paphos General Hospital stated that six bodies were transferred to a private funeral home. Authorities noted that there have been no formal complaints filed with the police so far. Onisiforou is demanding the immediate repair of the morgue's refrigeration systems and the permanent appointment of a pathologist in the district.
