European Parliament adopts resolution to reduce workplace fatalities
On May 21, 2026, the European Parliament plenary session approved a resolution titled 'The need to reduce work-related deaths' with 395 votes in favor, 12 against, and 41 abstentions. The initiative aims to achieve a 'zero loss' goal in EU workplaces through enhanced safety legislation, training, and preventive measures. Key areas of focus include emerging risks linked to artificial intelligence, the impact of climate change, and the prevention of workplace violence and harassment. The resolution mandates the establishment of an annual European Day of Remembrance for victims of workplace accidents and worker protection on August 8. This date honors the victims of the 1956 Bois du Cazier mine disaster in Marcinelle, Belgium. The measure emphasizes the need for annual progress assessments and improved accountability at both national and European levels. Member states are encouraged to exchange best practices to strengthen existing health and safety standards. Furthermore, the parliament calls for increased public awareness and stricter enforcement of labor laws to improve overall worker safety.
