Informal ecofin meeting held in Nicosia

The informal Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) meeting is taking place in Nicosia on Friday and Saturday, May 22–23, 2026, under the Cypriot Presidency of the EU. Chaired by Cypriot Minister of Finance Makis Keravnos, the event brings together EU finance ministers and central bank governors at the Filoxenia Conference Center. Key topics include strengthening EU competitiveness in a challenging geopolitical climate, with input from ESM Managing Director Pierre Gramegna and Professor Andreas Theophanos. Ministers are also addressing macroeconomic developments, the adoption of the digital euro with the presence of Aurore Lalucq, and the challenges of the housing sector. Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis has highlighted housing affordability as a top social and economic priority to be discussed during the Eurogroup session. The final session will feature a joint discussion between ministers and central bank governors on the characteristics and risks of stablecoins.
