Violent incidents in Colombia involving indigenous tribes and community leaders

On May 21, a land dispute between the Misak and Nasa indigenous tribes in the Cauca department of Colombia resulted in three deaths and 44 injuries. According to the Ombudsman's Office, the conflict centers on ancestral lands currently occupied by coca plantations controlled by armed groups. Social media footage showed physical clashes involving clubs and shields. Senator Aida Quilcue has called for a high-level government intervention to address this historical territorial dispute. Simultaneously, in a separate incident in the Norte de Santander department, six people were killed in an ambush near the Venezuelan border. The victims, including community leader Freiman Velasquez and his bodyguards, were traveling in an official government protection vehicle. Authorities report that the Catatumbo region, where this attack occurred, is a site of ongoing conflict between the ELN and FARC dissident factions. The country is currently experiencing its most violent electoral campaign in a decade, with at least 55 community leaders murdered since the beginning of the year.
