Eurostat report on population growth in Cyprus and the European Union

According to data from Eurostat, the population of the Republic of Cyprus reached 982,966 as of January 1, 2025. This reflects a 34% increase since 2005, making it one of the fastest-growing populations in the European Union, trailing only Luxembourg and Malta in relative growth. Despite this, Cyprus remains one of the least populated EU member states, accounting for approximately 0.2% of the total population. The average age in Cyprus is 41 years, which is lower than the EU average of 44.9 years. The total EU population in 2025 stands at approximately 450.65 million, an increase of 1.16 million from 2024. Sources differ slightly on the exact EU total, with figures ranging from 450.65 million to 451 million. EU growth is driven primarily by migration as mortality rates have exceeded birth rates since 2012. Additionally, the proportion of citizens aged 65 and over in the EU has risen from 17% in 2005 to 22% in 2025.
