Tennessee execution of Tony Carruthers postponed after medical staff failed to locate a vein

The execution of 57-year-old death row inmate Tony Carruthers in Tennessee was canceled on Thursday after medical personnel were unable to establish the secondary intravenous line required by state protocol. Carruthers, who has been imprisoned for over 30 years for the 1994 murders of Delois Anderson, Marcellos Anderson, and Frederick Tucker, maintains his innocence. Following the failed attempt, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee granted the prisoner a one-year reprieve. Advocacy group Tennesseans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (TADP) criticized the incident, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the transparency and safety of lethal injection procedures. Carruthers’ attorney, Melanie Verdashia, condemned the incident as a form of torture. Meanwhile, a separate execution proceeded as scheduled in the state of Florida on the same day.
