ETEK calls for better management of dangerous buildings in Cyprus

On Friday, Konstantinos Konstanti, President of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK), stated that dangerous buildings exist in Nicosia and across Cyprus. He clarified that being classified as dangerous does not automatically imply the need for demolition. To address this, ETEK has proposed the creation of a centralized digital database to monitor such buildings across the country. This platform aims to enhance transparency and provide better information to citizens while assisting authorities in monitoring safety issues. Under current regulations, authorities must notify owners of dangerous buildings to perform necessary restorations. If owners fail to comply, authorities are authorized to intervene directly and charge the costs to the owner, potentially pursuing the debt through legal channels. Konstanti emphasized that current legislative tools need strengthening and noted that a relevant bill has already been submitted to the House of Representatives.
