ELAM party doubles parliamentary seats in Cyprus elections

Following the recent parliamentary elections in Cyprus, the National Popular Front (ELAM) successfully doubled its presence in the House of Representatives, moving from four to eight seats. Party leader Christos Christou described the result as a significant victory and emphasized that the party is now prepared to shoulder increased responsibilities for the next five years. During his post-election statements, Christou highlighted that the party intends to focus on social justice and the preservation of national and religious identity. Regarding the upcoming parliamentary presidency, Christou stated that ELAM would claim its rightful participation in parliamentary committees based on tradition. He explicitly ruled out supporting the AKEL party for any leadership positions. While he previously supported Annita Demetriou in 2021, Christou indicated that ELAM would now reconsider its stance due to past grievances. The final decision on the parliamentary presidency is expected to follow internal party consultations before the official inauguration on June 4.
