Official election campaign silence period begins in Cyprus

The election campaign for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Cyprus concluded at midnight on Friday, May 22, 2026. According to the Chief Returning Officer, a legal period of silence is now in effect until the end of the voting day on Sunday, May 24. During this timeframe, public rallies, political debates, and all forms of direct or indirect election advertising are strictly prohibited. The ban encompasses traditional media, social networks, and internet applications. Existing online content posted before the silence period may remain, but no new content can be published. Billboard advertisements must be removed, and political parties may only keep their existing websites active as these are visited at the user's discretion. Violations of these regulations are considered criminal offenses, punishable by up to one year of imprisonment or a fine of up to 5,000 euros. The publication of opinion polls and exit polls is also prohibited during this period.
