Cyprus addresses UN Security Council on civilian protection
During an open debate at the United Nations Security Council, the Cypriot delegation emphasized the necessity of stronger international action to protect civilians in armed conflicts. Cyprus aligned itself with the European Union's statement while also providing a national position. The delegation called for a reaffirmation of the UN Charter and stricter adherence to international humanitarian and human rights laws. A major focus of the intervention was the rising number of forcibly displaced persons globally. Cyprus highlighted the concerns surrounding prolonged displacement situations. The country advocated for more robust action from the Security Council to ensure the right of return for displaced individuals. This includes respect for property rights and the prevention of illegal settlement activities in areas from which populations have been displaced. The Cypriot representative characterized these measures as both a legal obligation and a humanitarian necessity.
