Flash floods cause 24 deaths across Afghanistan

Heavy rainfall starting on Wednesday has triggered flash floods across multiple Afghan provinces, resulting in at least 24 deaths over the last 48 hours. Regional officials reported 15 fatalities in Baghlan province, two in Badakhshan, and one in Wardak, while six other deaths were reported in separate areas on Thursday. In Badakhshan, officials noted that two additional people remain missing and over 100 homes have been destroyed. Disaster management authorities confirmed that these events follow a persistent wave of severe weather that has impacted the country since late March. Previously, heavy rains throughout April caused 148 deaths and 137 injuries. Climate experts note that Afghanistan is increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather events linked to climate change. The affected regions face ongoing challenges due to the destruction of both residential infrastructure and agricultural land.
