Unesco committee discusses return of Parthenon Sculptures

The 14th Meeting of the Subsidiary Committee of the 1970 UNESCO Convention took place from May 18-19, 2026, followed by the 25th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property (ICPRCP) from May 20-22, 2026, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Cyprus participated as an observer, represented by Archaeologist Efthymia Alpha, and formally supported the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece. During the sessions, the Greek delegation and 20 member states advocated for the reunification of the sculptures with their original site at the Acropolis. The Cypriot delegation argued that retaining the sculptures in the British Museum perpetuates a colonial injustice and is morally, culturally, historically, and legally necessary. Additionally, it was noted that Turkey supports the Greek position, stating there is no official Ottoman permit (firman) legitimizing Lord Elgin's removal of the marbles. In contrast, the United Kingdom maintained its position, stating it has no intention of changing its domestic legislative framework regarding the collection. The discussions emphasized the progress made through bilateral efforts and the suitability of the Acropolis Museum for hosting the works.
