Official launch of #EUBeachCleanup campaign in Limassol
On Saturday morning, the #EUBeachCleanup campaign was officially launched at the Limassol pier. The event was attended by EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, and the Mayor of Limassol, Yiannis Armeftis. Both officials participated in a symbolic cleanup of the rocks along the coastline. The initiative followed two days of activities related to the European Maritime Day 2026, which brought together approximately 1,000 participants from across Europe to discuss the future of the seas. Commissioner Kadis highlighted the environmental impact of marine pollution, noting that an estimated 730 tons of plastic enter the Mediterranean Sea daily. He emphasized that these initiatives aim to both clean the environment and raise public awareness regarding plastic pollution. The commissioner noted that pollution represents a significant threat to the ecosystem and eventually affects human health through the food chain.
