President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that representatives have been instructed not to rush into a final deal with Iran, despite earlier reports suggesting a memorandum of understanding was largely negotiated. The U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz will remain in effect until a formal agreement is signed and certified. The conflict, which began on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel launched military operations against Iran, has disrupted a major global shipping route for oil and gas. Key points of contention include Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the status of Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Tehran’s demands for the lifting of sanctions and the release of tens of billions in frozen oil revenues. While U.S. officials described the negotiations as increasingly professional, the Iranian Tasnim news agency reported that disputes remain regarding the release of funds. Axios reported that the proposed draft includes a 60-day ceasefire and an end to the blockade in exchange for Iranian commitments to suspend uranium enrichment. Fars news agency has contested some of the U.S. claims, asserting that the agreement regarding the management of the strait as presented by Washington is inconsistent with reality.
