Disy party maintains strength in Cyprus parliamentary elections

In the recent parliamentary elections in Cyprus, the Democratic Rally (DISY) party secured 17 seats and maintained its electoral base, achieving approximately 27.2% of the vote. Party leader Annita Demetriou declared the outcome a victory for stability and responsibility, noting that voters rejected populism and toxicity. While some polls had predicted losses for the party, a late-stage mobilization of voters solidified its position. Demetriou confirmed receiving congratulatory calls from President Nikos Christodoulides and the Greek Prime Minister. Regarding the presidency of the House of Representatives, Demetriou stated that no formal decisions have been made, emphasizing that the party will deliberate internally in the coming days. Former President Nikos Anastasiades praised the result, describing it as an affirmation of Demetriou’s leadership. Meanwhile, ELAM leader Christos Christou has expressed reservations regarding potential support for Demetriou’s re-election as House president. The newly elected parliament is expected to convene next month to determine its leadership.
