DISY retains position in parliamentary elections
In the May 24, 2026, parliamentary elections, the Democratic Rally (DISY) maintained its status as the primary political force in Cyprus, securing 27.2% of the vote and 17 seats. Despite polls predicting significant losses due to internal divisions and voter apathy, the party managed a last-minute mobilization that reversed the downward trend. Party leader Annita Demetriou declared the result a victory for stability and security over what she described as a toxic political environment. Former President Nicos Anastasiades praised the outcome, characterizing it as a vindication of the party's leadership and a sign of consolidation for Demetriou. The election was marked by a fragmented political landscape and a rise in anti-establishment sentiment, yet DISY preserved its 2021 seat count. Demetriou announced that the party will prioritize reforms, social protection, and consensus-building in the new parliament. She is expected to be a candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives, though observers note that securing a majority may be more challenging this term.
