Oldest legislative candidate casts vote in Cyprus elections
On May 24, 2026, Cyprus held its legislative elections. The oldest candidate running for a parliamentary seat, 89-year-old Christakis Rotsidis, cast his ballot in Limassol. Rotsidis is contesting the election as an independent candidate. He stated that his decision to run without political party backing was based on a desire to be elected through his own efforts rather than relying on party support. By midday, voter turnout for the general election reached 32.3%, following a 12.8% turnout reported at 10:00 a.m. Additionally, for the first time in history, a polling station was established in Brussels to accommodate voters outside the country. The elections are taking place amidst various logistical adjustments at some voting centers.
