Common operational issues during election days in Limassol
Marios Alexandrou, the former District Officer of Limassol who served from 2017 to 2024, has highlighted common procedural issues encountered during election days. Having overseen the 2018 and 2023 presidential elections, the 2019 European elections, and the 2021 parliamentary elections, he noted that polling station presiding officers frequently forget their ballot box keys at home. This recurring issue occurs in at least two to three instances per electoral cycle. When this happens, the District Administration must dispatch a team to cut the lock and install a replacement, while keeping a spare key on file for security. Alexandrou explained that such incidents are easier to manage within urban centers than in remote communities. Additionally, other common occurrences include presiding officers or their assistants failing to report for duty due to illness or oversleeping. In these cases, the District Administration provides immediate replacements to ensure the integrity and continuity of the voting process.
