Tufan Erhurman visits Karpasia and discusses political and energy issues

On Saturday, Turkish Cypriot politician Tufan Erhurman visited the Maronite village of Karpasia following an invitation from local residents. During the visit, he met with both current residents and former inhabitants who now live in the southern part of Cyprus. In separate public statements, Erhurman raised concerns regarding the potential simultaneous scheduling of local and general elections. Specifically, he warned that holding local elections, slated for December, and parliamentary elections, planned for January 2027, on the same day could jeopardize electoral security, voting procedures, and democratic legitimacy. Furthermore, he noted that the administrative burden on the Supreme Election Council could be excessive. Regarding energy, Erhurman stated on Friday that regional issues such as natural gas, electricity interconnections, and maritime jurisdiction can either fuel tensions or serve as foundations for conflict resolution and inclusion.
