Cyprus parliamentary election results and National Council restructuring
On May 24, 2026, Cyprus held parliamentary elections resulting in a 56-member House of Representatives. The parties DISY, AKEL, ELAM, DIKO, Alma, and Direct Democracy secured parliamentary representation. Notable casualties included EDEK, which lost its seat after 56 years, and the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation, which exited after 25 years. Dimitris M. Dimitriou of DISY received the highest number of preference votes nationwide with 13,157, while 24-year-old Dimitris Baros of Direct Democracy was elected in Paphos with the lowest threshold of 280 votes. Due to these changes, the composition of the National Council is shifting to include leaders of the newly elected parties. The official inauguration of the 56 new MPs will occur shortly, with the first plenary session scheduled for June 4, 2026, to elect the new Speaker of the House. AKEL has initiated internal discussions to assess party intentions regarding the speakership, while DIKO president Nikolas Papadopoulos emphasized a need for centrist consolidation.
