Turkish Cypriot media coverage of the Republic of Cyprus parliamentary elections
Turkish and Turkish Cypriot media outlets have provided extensive coverage of the recent parliamentary elections in the Republic of Cyprus, focusing primarily on their potential impact on the Cyprus issue. According to reports, DISY secured the leading position with 27.2% of the vote and 17 seats, followed by AKEL with 23.9% and 15 seats. The rise of ELAM, which grew from 6.8% and 4 seats in 2021 to 10.9% and 8 seats, has been noted with concern regarding its effect on intercommunal relations and future negotiations. Other political movements, such as ALMA (5.8%, 4 seats) and Fidias Panayiotou’s Direct Democracy party (5.4%, 4 seats), were highlighted as significant new developments. Some media, such as Avrupa, emphasized the absence of the 24 seats reserved for the Turkish Cypriot community in the 80-seat parliament. The coverage also noted the candidacy of activist Oz Karahan, who ran with the Ecologists' Movement. Overall, these outlets suggested that the fragmented political landscape may complicate the restart of substantive peace negotiations.
