Thyroid cancer statistics and awareness in Cyprus
The Cyprus Cancer Registry reported 335 new cases of thyroid cancer in 2023, comprising 288 women and 107 men, showing a decrease from 421 cases in 2022. This cancer type is identified as the second most frequent in women and the sixth in men. In conjunction with World Thyroid Day on May 25, the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF) emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and prevention. Georgia Orfanou, Director of Prevention and Social Marketing at PASYKAF, highlighted that awareness of symptoms such as persistent hoarseness, painless neck lumps, and swallowing difficulties is essential. Risk factors include female gender, age, family history, childhood radiation exposure, obesity, diabetes, and iodine deficiency. PASYKAF recommends regular medical check-ups and periodic self-examinations to ensure timely intervention. The organization continues to focus on public education to improve health outcomes regarding thyroid disorders.
