Gender representation in the Cypriot House of Representatives

Following the recent parliamentary elections in Cyprus, women secured 11 of the 56 seats in the House of Representatives, amounting to 19.6%. The breakdown by party shows DISY with four seats, AKEL with three, ALMA with two, and Direct Democracy and DIKO with one seat each, while ELAM holds none. This result marks an increase from the 14.3% of seats held by women in the 2021-2026 parliament but remains level with the 19.6% recorded in 2016-2021. The Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS) noted that of the 753 total candidates, only 224 were women, representing 29.7% of the field. MIGS has called for the implementation of binding quotas and equality mechanisms to address the low participation. The institute highlighted that Cyprus ranks second to last in the EU regarding gender parity in power, according to the 2025 Gender Equality Index. Additionally, the European average for female parliamentarians stands at 32.3% as of March 2026, significantly higher than current Cypriot figures.
