Diko leader evaluates options for House of Representatives presidency
Following the recent parliamentary elections in Cyprus, Diko leader Nicholas Papadopoulos announced he is considering all options, including a potential bid for the presidency of the House of Representatives. Diko retained eight out of its nine parliamentary seats in the election, a result Papadopoulos described as a significant achievement given earlier negative polling. The party leadership plans to discuss the parliamentary strategy and potential alliances within the next 24 hours. Historically, Diko collaborated with Disy to elect Annita Demetriou as House president five years ago. However, the current political landscape is shifting, as Elam leader Christos Christou recently stated his party would withdraw support for Demetriou, citing grievances from her tenure. Papadopoulos emphasized that his primary goals remain the implementation of government policy and national stability. He also expressed a desire to unite the centre-right political spectrum in the upcoming parliamentary term. Meanwhile, negotiations regarding the formation of governing alliances and the election of the speaker are expected to intensify.
