Autonomous bus collides with tram in Gothenburg
On the first day of carrying passengers in Gothenburg, Sweden, an autonomous bus was involved in a collision with a tram. According to the public transport company Vasttrafik, the bus performed an emergency stop, resulting in the tram hitting it from behind. No injuries were reported among passengers. While sources differ on the extent of the damage—one reporting physical damage and another claiming no damage—the bus has been taken out of service for inspection. The vehicle had been operating in the city center since late March, but Monday marked the start of passenger service. A safety driver was present on board to intervene if necessary. The trial is authorized by the Swedish Transport Agency, Transportstyrelsen, and is scheduled to run until July 31, 2027. Currently, autonomous transport in Europe operates under local permits as the EU has not yet established pan-European commercial regulations for driverless public transport.
