Limassol District Self-Government Organization clarifies building safety responsibilities
Following the April 11 building collapse in Yermasoyia that resulted in two deaths, the Limassol District Self-Government Organization (EOA) has issued a formal statement regarding building safety. The organization emphasized that the primary and exclusive responsibility for the maintenance, structural integrity, and safety of private buildings lies with the property owners and management committees. EOA clarified that it is not responsible for continuous inspections or certification of private properties. The organization noted a surge in citizen inquiries regarding building safety and neighbor disputes, confirming that it does not act as a mediator for private disagreements. Owners are urged to proactively conduct professional structural assessments, particularly for older buildings or those showing signs of decay like cracks, dampness, or structural deformation. This guidance aims to manage public anxiety while reaffirming the legal obligations of private stakeholders.
