Akel deliberates on House presidency strategy
On June 2, the Political Bureau of Akel met to evaluate the results of the May 24 legislative elections, which the party described as a significant success. The leadership discussed the upcoming election for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, scheduled for June 4, 2026. No final decision was reached during the session, and the matter has been referred to the Central Committee, which is set to meet on June 3 at 3:00 PM. Two main scenarios are under consideration: either an independent candidacy by General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou or a potential alliance with the Democratic Party (Diko) and its leader, Nicolas Papadopoulos. Akel has explicitly ruled out any cooperation with Elam, labeling it a far-right movement. Meanwhile, Disy has announced its support for Annita Dimitriou. The final vote is critical as it may reshape parliamentary alliances and influence future political landscapes, including the 2028 presidential elections.
