AKEL nominates Stefanos Stefanou for House Speaker
The Central Committee of AKEL has unanimously decided to nominate its General Secretary, Stefanos Stefanou, for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives. The decision follows discussions within the party's Political Bureau and confirms support from AKEL-Left-Social Alliance and ALMA. The party explicitly ruled out any cooperation with the far-right or the governing DISY party. Meanwhile, other political forces, including DIKO, are keeping their options open ahead of the plenary vote scheduled for June 4. The current President of the House, Annita Demetriou of DISY, and Christos Christou of ELAM have also emerged as potential candidates. Political consultations remain ongoing, with DIKO awaiting further developments before finalizing its stance. The election remains highly competitive, as no single party holds a parliamentary majority, making the outcome dependent on shifting alliances.
