Annita Demetriou re-elected as president of the house of representatives
Annita Demetriou, leader of the Democratic Rally (DISY), was re-elected as president of the Cypriot House of Representatives. The outcome was secured through a strategic agreement with the four members of the Direct Democracy movement, led by Fidias Panayiotou. During negotiations, Panayiotou sought commitments on specific policy priorities, including the alignment of pensions with the minimum wage, the provision of housing incentives, and the creation of an ad hoc committee for artificial intelligence. While some reports suggested the involvement of Averof Neofytou in the discussions, Panayiotou clarified that the support was a result of successful negotiations regarding his movement's policy goals. The decision to support Demetriou was finalized shortly before the plenary session, despite internal discussions within his party about alternative options. Political analysts noted that the re-election reflects DISY's strength following the parliamentary elections. International and local figures, including Armenian parliament president Alen Simonyan and former president Nicos Anastasiades, expressed their support for her continued leadership.
