Cyprus political parties prepare for House of Representatives presidency election
On June 4, the Cypriot parliament will hold an election for its next President. The Democratic Rally (DISY) has officially announced that its party leader, Annita Demetriou, will be their candidate for the position. The party based its decision on its performance in the May 24 elections, citing 101,013 votes as a strong mandate. Conversely, Odysseas Michaelides of the ALMA party has explicitly ruled out supporting Demetriou or Nikolas Papadopoulos, suggesting Irini Charalambidou as an alternative. Papadopoulos, the leader of DIKO, has concluded an initial round of consultations with all parliamentary party leaders to discuss the presidency and broader parliamentary architecture. While DISY maintains that it will not enter into bargaining for the seat, other political forces, including AKEL and ELAM, have yet to finalize their voting stances. The outcome remains uncertain, with negotiations between parties actively ongoing to secure the necessary majority.
