Parliamentary parties negotiate for the presidency of the House
Following the elections on May 24, Cyprus's six parliamentary parties are engaged in negotiations to elect a new President of the House of Representatives. Annita Dimitriou, the current president and leader of the DISY party, has officially announced her candidacy for re-election, citing a successful previous term and a strong mandate from the voters. The AKEL party, which saw an increase in its electoral performance, is scheduled to hold a Political Bureau meeting this coming Tuesday to decide its strategy. Options for AKEL include fielding its own candidate, supporting DIKO leader Nicolas Papadopoulos, or considering the proposal by the ALMA movement to back Irene Charalambidou. Meanwhile, ELAM has confirmed it will field its own candidate in the first round. The parliamentary landscape remains complex, with no single party able to secure the presidency without forming alliances. All parties are currently assessing their options in what has been described as a strategic game of negotiation.
