Parliamentary speaker election process and candidate nominations
The Cyprus House of Representatives is set to elect its new President following the May 24 legislative elections. The voting process will take place at 16:00, with a new parliamentary framework requiring 29 votes for a first-round victory. If no candidate secures an absolute majority, the top two candidates will proceed to a second round. The AKEL party has unanimously nominated its Secretary-General, Stefanos Stefanou, whose candidacy is supported by the ALMA party. Other potential contenders include Annita Demetriou for DISY and Nicolas Papadopoulos for DIKO, though final positions from parties like ELAM and Direct Democracy remain in flux. ELAM is considering supporting Nicolas Papadopoulos if certain policy conditions regarding education, defense, and agriculture are met. The session will be presided over by the oldest member, Zacharias Koulias, unless he is a candidate, in which case the next eldest member will take charge.
