Parties negotiate the presidency of the house of representatives
Political consultations are underway in Cyprus ahead of the House of Representatives presidency vote, scheduled in six days. The Democratic Rally (DISY) has officially confirmed Annita Demetriou as its candidate for the position. Meanwhile, Nicolas Papadopoulos of the Democratic Party (DIKO) is actively pursuing the post, with the party clarifying that Christiana Erotokritou is not a candidate. AKEL, led by Stefanos Stefanou, has kept its strategy flexible and plans to hold a meeting of its political bureau this coming Tuesday. Stefanou has held meetings with representatives from DIKO, ALMA, and expects a discussion with Fidias Panayiotou of Direct Democracy. Direct Democracy has not ruled out any cooperation and is considering a digital poll among citizens to determine its stance. ALMA has publicly stated it will not support candidates from DISY, DIKO, or ELAM, while indicating potential interest in Irene Charalambides or Stefanou. The overall political landscape remains fluid with ongoing back-channel negotiations expected to intensify after the upcoming holiday weekend.
