Cyprus president expects renewed efforts for talks as UN envoy returns

President Nikos Christodoulides stated on Thursday that there is a window of opportunity to restart Cyprus negotiations before the end of the UN Secretary-General’s current term. UN personal envoy Maria Angela Holguín is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus on June 6 and hold separate meetings with the two leaders on June 8. This visit follows a four-month absence, during which discreet consultations have been ongoing to create the necessary conditions for a breakthrough. The President emphasized that the goal is not endless discussion but a process leading to a final result. Furthermore, President Christodoulides met with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaish Jaishankar to discuss the IMEC corridor initiative as part of broader geopolitical and economic cooperation. Holguín is expected to stay in the region for approximately ten days for talks with stakeholders before traveling to Greece and Turkey. While some reports suggest she brings specific ideas for a strategic agreement, officials reiterate that these meetings are part of a continuous process initiated by Antonio Guterres.
