Livestock farmers protest over foot-and-mouth disease measures

On Friday, May 29, livestock farmers gathered at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia to protest against government policies regarding the slaughter of animals affected by foot-and-mouth disease. The demonstration led to initial tension with the police, who restricted the use of heavy trucks for the march to the Presidential Palace, citing public safety and traffic concerns. While the police stated an agreement was reached to allow only three pickup trucks and private vehicles to proceed, protest leader Neofytos Neofytou accused authorities of attempting to marginalize the farmers. Following hours of uncertainty and internal disagreement, the protesters eventually moved from the GSP area to the Presidential Palace. There, a delegation met with government officials, including the Deputy Minister to the President, Irini Piki. The protest concluded after it was confirmed that the farmers will meet with President Nikos Christodoulides next Tuesday to discuss their concerns. Meanwhile, Veterinary Services conducted an extensive disinfection operation at the GSP stadium to ensure sanitary conditions for the Cyprus Cup final between Apollon Limassol and Pafos FC, scheduled for that evening.
