Fatal fall during immigration police operation in Larnaca

On the morning of May 27, 2026, an operation by the Alien and Immigration Service to identify individuals residing illegally in Cyprus took place at the Filanda apartment building in the Larnaca port area. During the raid, three foreign nationals jumped from balconies in an attempt to evade capture. One man, who fell from the third floor, sustained critical head injuries and was intubated at the Larnaca General Hospital, but passed away on the night of May 27. Two others, aged 28 and 38, fell from the fourth floor to a terrace on the second floor and remain hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The fire department assisted with a telescopic vehicle to retrieve the injured from the building. Police reported that 22 individuals were arrested as a result of the operation, though some earlier reports cited 10 or 19 arrests. The deceased man's identity remains unknown, and the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department is conducting an investigation into the incident.
