Fatal incident during immigration operation in Larnaca
On May 27, a 46-year-old asylum seeker from the Democratic Republic of Congo died after falling from a fourth-floor apartment building in Larnaca during an operation by the Aliens and Immigration Service. Two other individuals also fell during the incident, which occurred in the building's common areas. Larnaca Police Director Ioannis Kapnoullas stated that police had not entered any apartments and were not near the individuals at the time of the fall. He emphasized that no internal investigation is being conducted, as the case is being handled as an unnatural death and will be referred to a coroner. The involved police officers are providing testimonies as part of the formal file. The building, which has over 90 owners, had previously been flagged by the Larnaca District Self-Government Organization as one of 25 properties prioritized for structural safety inspections. A peaceful vigil was held by local foreign residents in memory of the deceased.
