Fatal incident during immigration operation at Filanta complex in Larnaca
On Wednesday morning, a police and immigration operation targeting undocumented individuals at the Filanta apartment complex in Larnaca resulted in three foreign nationals falling from balconies. While initial reports provided varying accounts regarding the floor levels, police confirmed that one unidentified man fell from the fourth floor, sustaining a critical head injury, and subsequently died at Larnaca General Hospital on Wednesday evening. Two other men, Congolese nationals aged 28 and 38, were discovered in a separate rear courtyard and were rescued by the fire service before being hospitalized in non-life-threatening condition. Police have cordoned off the five-block complex to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the falls. The Filanta complex has faced long-standing concerns from local authorities regarding safety and building conditions, with residents noting instances of squatting in unoccupied units. This incident follows a similar fatal event in Limassol in April 2024. Authorities have not yet confirmed if any arrests were made during the operation.
