EU foreign ministers hold informal Gymnich meeting in Limassol

On May 27 and 28, 2026, European Union foreign ministers gathered in Limassol, Cyprus, for the informal 'Gymnich' meeting. Hosted by Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and chaired alongside EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, the session focused on the war in Ukraine, regional instability in the Middle East, and the development of a new European Security Strategy. Notably, the foreign ministers of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah Al Saud, attended to discuss maritime security and supply chain resilience. During the event, EU officials emphasized the need to maintain strong support for Ukraine and warned against premature peace negotiations with Russia, which Latvian officials described as an existential long-term threat. Discussions also covered the potential acceleration of EU accession processes for Ukraine and Moldova, as well as the enhancement of European defense production. The meeting, which followed an opening dinner attended by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, aimed to provide a strategic compass for the bloc's foreign policy.
