Cyprus authorities conduct nationwide operation against illegal employment
On July 16, 2026, Cypriot authorities conducted a joint operation targeting 16 catering establishments across the country to combat illegal and undeclared work. The operation involved the Aliens and Immigration Service, the Deputy Ministry of Immigration, and the Labour Inspection Department. A total of 47 individuals were arrested for illegal employment, with nine of those also facing charges for residing illegally in the Republic of Cyprus. Beyond criminal proceedings, 16 employers received administrative fines totaling €195,000 for employing undeclared workers. Police confirmed that such inspections are part of a daily effort to maintain public order and enforce labor laws. This operation is distinct from ongoing police investigations into violent incidents involving Syrian nationals in Xylophagou, where five individuals remain in custody. Authorities have warned that they will not tolerate illegal criminal behavior or violations of employment legislation.
