Police operations in Cyprus and arrests following Xylofagou clash
Cypriot police conducted nationwide preventive patrols on July 8, checking hundreds of vehicles and premises to enhance public security. These operations resulted in nine arrests for various offenses, including illegal drug possession and immigration violations. Separately, police are investigating a violent clash that occurred in Xylofagou on the night of July 8, involving approximately 15 to 20 Syrian nationals. The incident was reportedly sparked by long-standing financial disputes between two related groups from Larnaca and Xylofagou. Participants used weapons such as hammers, crowbars, knives, and clubs, while one individual attempted to strike opponents with a vehicle, which subsequently crashed into a building. Three individuals aged 20, 27, and 30 have been arrested in connection with the fight, with the younger two remanded in custody for eight days by the Famagusta District Court. Authorities are actively searching for eight additional suspects who fled the scene, including the owner of the vehicle used in the assault. Investigators have collected physical evidence, including the vehicle and various weapons, for forensic analysis.
