Cypriot trade unions propose linking public contracts to collective bargaining

Following a meeting on February 25, Cypriot trade unions SEK, PEO, and DEOK submitted a joint letter to the President of the Republic of Cyprus. The proposal advocates for a policy requiring businesses to adhere to collective labor agreements as a condition for securing public sector contracts. The unions were specifically invited by the government to identify sectors suitable for this implementation. As an initial step, the organizations suggested focusing on security and cleaning services. Additionally, the proposal requests that these requirements be extended to organizations and bodies that receive state subsidies or utilize public funding. This initiative aims to standardize labor rights across government-funded operations. The letter was reported publicly on May 28, 2026.
