Suspended Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos to face criminal court
Suspended Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos is scheduled to appear before the Paphos Criminal Court regarding an alleged rape case dating back to 2014. During the hearing, he will face four formal charges: rape, indecent assault, administering substances with intent to commit a felony or misdemeanor, and causing actual bodily harm. Phedonos has already provided a personal guarantee of 100,000 euros to ensure his presence in court. A key point of contention is whether the trial will be held in closed session, as the prosecution intends to request, citing the need to protect the privacy of the alleged victim and referencing specific legal provisions concerning violence against women. The defense team, consisting of Christos Pourgourides and Epameinondas Korakides, is expected to formally object to this request. The case was investigated by a special police team from headquarters. If Phedonos pleads guilty, the court may proceed to sentencing, while a not guilty plea would lead to the scheduling of a new trial date for witness testimonies.
