Trial of suspended Paphos mayor adjourned after judge recusal
The trial of the suspended Mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, was adjourned on May 28, 2026, following a request for recusal by Judge Nikodemos Fakontis. The Judge of the Paphos Permanent Assizes Court cited three potential conflicts of interest, including a previous legal case involving his late father and the Paphos Sewerage Board, of which the accused is president. Other grounds for his request included past disputes between the accused and the Eusevia club, managed by the judge's relatives, and a close relationship between his sister and the defendant's family. Phedonos faces four serious charges, including rape, indecent assault, administration of a noxious substance, and assault causing bodily harm. He has signed a €100,000 personal bail guarantee to remain at liberty during proceedings. Defense lawyer Christos Pourgourides supported the judge's decision to step down, while noting his client's frustration with media coverage and alleged police leaks. The case has now been referred to the Supreme Court to select a replacement judge. The next hearing is scheduled for June 24 at 09:00, where the accused is expected to enter a plea.
